The Woman in Black by Susan Hill Review: Atmospheric, Acclaimed, and Deeply Disappointing
Despite its reputation as one of Britain's most celebrated ghost stories, The Woman in Black ultimately left me disappointed. Susan Hill's atmospheric writing and commitment to classic gothic horror are easy to appreciate, but for me, the novel prioritised mood over meaningful story progression. While I can understand why so many readers consider it a modern classic, the slow pacing, emotional distance from the characters, and lack of genuine scares meant that this much-loved tale never managed to capture my imagination.
